Met Office issues cold weather alert

Current alert level: Level 2 – Alert and Readiness in one or more regions of England

Issued at: Sunday 29 January 2012 at 10:02

There is a 80% probability of severe cold weather between 1200 on Sunday and 1000 on Thursday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust’s emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow across southwest England will edge across parts of the west Midlands and central-southern England later today and through tomorrow. Snow accumulations are expected but these should be mostly over higher ground. Elsewhere, cold and rather cloudy today and tomorrow with some persistent fog/freezing fog patches and a few wintry showers around the east coast. Becoming more settled and remaining cold from Tuesday onwards with widespread overnight frosts and a bitter easterly wind. Most areas will be dry although a few wintry showers will move in from the east at times. Turning colder on Wednesday and Thursday, especially across eastern and south-eastern England, with daytime temperatures struggling to rise above zero. This alert will be re-issued and extended for the rest of the working week tomorrow morning. There is also the likelihood that the alert level will be increased to a level 3 for some areas when the alert is issued tomorrow.

Sheltered Housing Scheme Install Boiler Buoy

Broxtowe Borough Council

One Council in Nottinghamshire in the severe winter of 2010/11 had boiler lock outs on all 48 properties in a sheltered housing scheme due to external condensate pipes freezing.

Having considered the options and cost, Broxtowe Borough Council specified the Boiler Buoy as a solution to help maintain boiler operation during the prolonged and unseasonably early sub-zero temperatures.

Broxtowe have a contract with Carrillion Energy Service to undertake their service and maintenance requirements, who purchased the Boiler Buoy valve from Plumb Center and Parts Center, Nottingham.

Gary Kozimore of Broxtowe Borough Council said “Carrillion Energy Services have done an excellent job in sourcing and installing the Boiler Buoy. They were able to source the product to our specification from Plumb Center, which had the availability at the right cost. Plus, the flexibility of the Boiler Buoy has enabled installation in a variety of ways best suited to the boiler location.

Plumb Center hosts Future Heat 2011

INNOVATION, education and information – it’s all packed into the ever-popular Future Heat nights, currently being staged by Plumb Center and Parts Center at key locations this autumn.

The events, which this year are supported by leading manufacturers Fernox, Grundfos, Honeywell, Kingspan, Myson, Pump House, Uponor and Worcester Bosch, enable installers to learn more about how the industry is changing, as well as providing the latest information about products, initiatives and services.

One new feature this year will be a presentation, at each event, by a regional renewables’ expert, so installers can be bang up-to-date with this immerging market. And staff from Plumb Center’s Sustainable Building Center (SBC) will also be on hand to keep installers informed about the latest training courses on offer.

The nights have become a significant date in the calendar of Plumb Center and Parts Center. They were revamped in 2008 because the company recognised a responsibility to educate installers on industry developments.

Alan Stevenson, Trading Director, Plumb Center, said: “These evenings provide an invaluable opportunity for our guests to network with fellow traders and manufacturers, while learning about the latest products and technologies.

“We’re convinced that developing this team approach will not only foster better working relationships but will help us all prosper during this challenging but exciting moment in our industry’s history,” he added.

During the evenings, installers will be able to take advantage of a number of special offers from the manufacturers and additional eXtra points will be given on any purchases.
